Leverage cuts both ways: CFD losses can exceed what you expected to risk.

Indices Trading in the Philippines

Timson Securities is a SEC-regulated domestic broker and a Philippine Stock Exchange trading participant, which means its product line is PSE-listed equities and REITs rather than index CFDs on the S&P 500, Nasdaq or DAX. Leveraged index CFDs with 1:500 margin are not part of this platform's offering. A licensed, locally supervised route to Philippine market exposure is.

That distinction matters more than any fee table. A brokerage license defines what a firm is legally allowed to sell, and Timson Securities' license is built around cash-market PSE participation, not derivatives. What follows is what that means for fees, minimums, tax reporting, and which trading styles the setup actually suits.

Which trading styles fit here

Timson Securities runs a cash-market model on PSE-listed instruments. Positions settle through the Philippine Stock Exchange and the Securities Clearing Corporation of the Philippines, so there is no overnight swap, no rollover charge, and no leverage mechanic to manage. For a swing trader working daily or weekly bars on PSE index constituents, that is a clean fit: you buy, you hold, you sell, and your only cost line is commission plus statutory charges.

For a scalper, the picture inverts. Intraday scalping needs tight spreads, fast fills, and low per-trade friction. A 0.25% commission per transaction is a heavy load for trading in and out several times a session. PSE trading hours are also short by global standards: roughly 09:30 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 14:45 Philippine Standard Time, with no evening session. There is no London or New York overlap to trade into.

NOTE
The platform is built for execution of PSE-listed stocks and REITs. If your strategy depends on index derivatives, cross-asset hedging, or 24/5 access, the instrument set itself is the limiting factor, not the fee schedule.

What indices exposure actually means here

Timson Securities does not list index CFDs. What it gives you is access to the individual stocks and REITs that make up the PSE index universe, which means you can build index-like exposure by holding constituents, but you cannot trade the index itself as a single leveraged instrument.

The full tradable set is all non-suspended PSE-listed stocks and REITs. That is a broad list, and it covers the names that dominate the index by weight, but it is a cash equities list. No futures, no options, no contracts for difference on the index level.

The regulatory picture is practical here rather than theoretical. The Securities and Exchange Commission Philippines regulates securities, CFDs and investment solicitation, while the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas oversees FX transactions, leverage and payment systems. The SEC does not currently issue local retail forex or CFD dealer licences, so Filipinos who want index CFD exposure generally use offshore-regulated brokers instead. Timson Securities has not taken that route: its licence is domestic, PSE-facing, and cash-market.

Fees, minimums and settlement

Costs on this platform are fixed by exchange and statutory rules rather than by marketing. Several of the lines below are not the broker's revenue at all.

ChargeRateNotes
Broker commission0.25% per transactionApplied on buys and sells

PSE fee0.005%Exchange charge
SCCP fee0.01%Clearing charge

The minimum initial deposit for a Timson Trade online account, which is structured as a 3-in-1 CAIF, is PHP 100,000. That threshold filters out small test positions. A PHP 100,000 account trading a PHP 50,000 position round-trip would pay roughly PHP 250 in commission before VAT and statutory charges.

Deposits and withdrawals run through bank channels only, via bank transfer and online banking. The base and settlement currency is PHP, so there is no FX conversion layer on the account itself.
PRO TIP
Settlement and reporting are PHP-denominated and bank-channel based. There is no e-wallet rail like GCash or Maya on this platform, so funding is a slower, more formal process than with offshore brokers.

Red Flags

There is no Islamic or swap-free account option. For observant clients in Mindanao or the BARMM region, that closes off this platform and points toward brokers that offer swap-free structures on request.

There is also no retail forex and no leveraged derivatives desk. Margin is limited to what the PSE cash market permits. A CFD account carries a fundamentally different risk profile: with leverage you can lose more than your position value, and you can amplify a small account into index-scale exposure. That amplification is a different product category entirely, and it is a category this licence does not cover.

The regulatory reality, calmly

Timson Securities, Inc. is an established Philippine stock brokerage firm and a member of the Philippine Stock Exchange, regulated by the SEC Philippines and a SCCP member. That is a supervisory framework with defined reporting obligations.

It does not cover offshore CFD or forex activity, because the firm does not offer those products. For context on the wider market: the SEC Philippines publishes ongoing advisories against unauthorised and unregistered forex and investment platforms, and as of the 2025-2026 period those advisories have named firms including Exness, HFM/HF Markets, Interactive Brokers, VT Markets and FBS. That list is dynamic, and the honest move for any Filipino trader is to check the current entries at the SEC advisories page before funding any platform, domestic or offshore.

Tax treatment on index gains

Profits from trading are taxed as ordinary income in the Philippines, not under a separate capital gains regime. The authority is the Bureau of Internal Revenue, and the reporting line is "Other Taxable Income" on the annual income tax return. Resident citizens are taxed on worldwide income; non-residents at a flat 25% on PH-sourced income.

ItemTreatment
Taxable baseRealised net gains on closed trades only
Unrealised gainsNot included
Net lossesMay be claimed as itemized deductions
Resident rate structureTRAIN progressive: 0% up to PHP 250,000, up to 35% over PHP 8,000,000
Non-resident rateFlat 25% on PH-sourced income

Resident citizens are taxed on worldwide income, which matters if you also hold positions through offshore accounts. The administrative consequence is that you need clean trade records: entry, exit, and net realised result per position, held for the full tax year.

What to weigh before committing

The deposit threshold and the commission structure both push in the same direction: this is a platform designed for investors and position traders, not for high-frequency retail activity.

If your plan is to hold PSE index constituents for weeks or months, the fee load is proportionate, the settlement mechanics are standard, and the domestic licence means your counterparty is supervised locally. If your plan is to trade index momentum intraday with dozens of round trips, the per-transaction cost will erode returns faster than most strategies can compensate, and the short trading session leaves little room to work.

The venue and the strategy have to match, and this venue's design tells you clearly which strategy it was built for.

Questions

Do I pay tax on index trading gains in the Philippines?

Yes, as ordinary income reported under "Other Taxable Income" on the annual return filed with the Bureau of Internal Revenue. Only realised net gains on closed trades are included, net losses may be claimed as itemized deductions, and resident individuals face TRAIN progressive rates from 0% up to PHP 250,000 through a top bracket of 35%.

Can I trade S&P 500 or Nasdaq indices with Timson Securities?

No. The tradable instrument set is all non-suspended PSE-listed stocks and REITs. There are no index CFDs, futures or options on foreign indices. Exposure to the PSE index itself comes through holding its constituent stocks, not through a single index instrument.

What is the minimum to open a Timson Trade account?

PHP 100,000 as the minimum initial deposit, for the Timson Trade online account structured as a 3-in-1 CAIF. Funding runs through bank transfer and online banking, and the account base currency is PHP.
